Really like this idea. Like the Dorian Grey painting.
I can imagine the highwaymen help out, with lady Hanbrook moving about, keeping her painting that is influencing her safe and hidden. Thematically, after one fight round, when she moves to a new location, I wonder how this would happen, in a story, and when the hero attacks, I presume they are attacking the lady and the painting. How us the villain finally defeated, if no wounds are actually done. Is it that the painting is destroyed by 10 wounds?
I can imagine all the mad elders wandering round the board with lady hanbrook, and the heroes suddenly finding themselves in a different location without even knowing how they got there! As soon as I can see a story, or invent one, I'll write down my background to this and happily do battle. I think the evil painter might stay at the inn next and do some more portraits!

How about for finding the actual painting (villain), something like with the riders skull card, from the epic spectral horseman, where the paintings location is predetermined by a lair card. When shadow track crosses into a new stage, a new location is determined. Anyone in the space where the painting counter is put on the board may search for it, rolling dice equal to the investigation cost on the lair card, then if any 5 or 6's rolled, they may pay 10 investigation (only the investigation they have gained from fights with the lady hanbrook minion, which they would have to keep aside separate from other investigation), and discard 2 items/allies, to find the painting. Until they have built up 10 investigation in this way, by fighting the minion, they can't search for the painting, as they do not actually know WHAT they are looking for.

The showdown could automatically commence as soon as they start their turn where the counter is, with them fighting the painting and it's elder allies (lady hanbrook at least, or all secrets could be revealed and any evil elders join too).

This would mean they can't rush into a showdown, without thoroughly investigating lady hanbrook in the one round skirmishes. They have to let her go after 1 fight round, as they know they have not got to the bottom of what is plaguing Shadowbrook - they can't kill her- she is clearly possessed by something, and they have to find out what..... Also, they can't just kill lady Hanbrook - it would be murder, with no proof of any evil, so they need the true story to tell the village of Shadowbrook
