GoW-OD Bucket List Painting
I started painting this project in January 2017 & it went dormant in
May 2017.The following is from my paint Blog for that period.

The GoW Painting Project has begun (FINALLY) . I finished up the ZBP figs
today (186 figs) my brushes are shot so I ordered 3 (insane detail, detail & smalldrybrush)
for the GoW figs. It will probably take until at least next week to get them & I
also ordered Army Green,Angel Green & Uniform Grey for the project.
The problem with getting GoW painted (besides the sticky base coat which took
months to dry) was trying to figure out the clothing/armor colors. The various pics
provide a wide choice & the sculps are a mass of straps & buckles.
Here's the final cut
Locust:
Skin-Warpaint Ash Grey
Cloth-Warpaint Necromancer Grey
Armor-Black
Straps- Oak brown-highlight Leather brown (Warpaint)
Armor trim- Red-Warpaint but not sure which Chaos, dragon, abomination
V.Dark, bright, medium)
eye sockets-Abomination Red ( Warpaint)
Skin Wash-Warpaint Strong tone
These are the Drones & Boomer types- I'll figure out the others later but
will keep the skin Ash Grey.
Beast types Locust
Wretches- Monster brown (warpaint)
Tickers- mix grey/brown skin-Shell Green brown (warpaint)
Baruk- Golden Brown (Ripper)-Deep Shade Wash(Warpaint)
CoG:
Skin- Light flesh or Dark Flesh(Warpaints)
Cloth-Army Green (Warpaint)
Armor- Angel Green(Warpaint-basically GW Dark Angel Green)
Straps- as per Locust
Armor trim-probably none just highlight-Snot Green GW ?
I'm doing all the figs skin first & then paint by fig types( so 3-6 each group)
I did do the basic Drones skin & 1 Butcher Boomer type to see how it looked
& it's a perfect match to the Vid Game ones.
PM-did the 18 Drone figs,9 Boomer, & 3 Kantus figs skin. I started on an Armored
Kantus but it stopped snowing & I had to shovel out the driveways
PS- When I doing the Drones with the flame thrower I noticed a piece of the
small tank that went on the side of the gun was missing on 1 fig. These were conversions
using GW lasecannons jump packs & the small tank was a piece of a sprue that I
had cut off. I was able to find another sprue with the same nodule I had used so
I cut it off & glued it to the gun. I'll need to basecoat it by hand tomorrow using watered down
black. I had moved all these figs from my old house so it's a wonder more stuff didn't come
loose.
The Converted stuff all held together.

Admin Subject: Re: The Cog Blog Sun 8 Jan 2017 - 12:43
AM-I finished up the Kantus,Theron Gd models skin. I was checking up on the
Wretches,Tickers & discovered their really bred from animals (monkies, dogs, rodents, reptiles)
so I can do their skins different which is good on my Ash Grey paint pot.
I still have some conversions that I was looking at which could easily be incorporated into
the Game.
General Karn- Theron Gd body with weapon & hands removed & replaced with Kantus
hands/weapon.
The Speaker- Kantus body with head of Wretch.
I figure I can plug either into a Game that features General Rann as an alternate leader.
I also have to give the maulers their Boom Shields using GW shields.
PM-I decided on Monster Brown (warpaints) for the Wretches. I painted up 2 but having
company soon so everything else will wait till tomorrow.
I did wash prep the conversion figs.
It's odd painting the Locust figs, I'm not sure if its the sculp ,( they did a good job on giving
the figs that lumpy skin look, the basecoat or my dying brush?
like dislike
The spray base coat took months & months to dry (never had that problem with any other
figs & I've done hundreds) and I noticed while painting the bottom of the bases are still
sticky, it doesn't matter of course but I wonder if effects the painting.
The paint seems to miss a lot of little crevices the skin has so I need to go back over to
make sure everything is covered. I can see why so many shown on BGG were dry brushed
I might have tried that but my dry brush is worn to the nub so it's not an option.

Admin Subject: Re: The Cog Blog Mon 9 Jan 2017 - 12:06
I finished the skin on the 6 Wretches & did the conversions for the Speaker &
General Karn. The Tickers will be next but I'll need to do the bases on them first
otherwise I won't be able to get to them as the figs set so low on them.
The Tickers I'm thinking of a grey/brown mix for the skin & a Greenish brown for the shell
I don't like to mix paints but these things are suppose to be a rat/reptile hybrid
Bases- I had planned to do Uniform Grey but in looking at the GoW tiles they have
a greenish tint so maybe Uniform Grey with a Necro flesh dry brush.
Maulers-are my Hero Clicks prepaints converted to a regular round base. I noticed
they use basically a black leather /silver dry brush whereas I've decided to do the
Locus leathers in Oak Brown so I'll probably redo their leathers to fit in with the
other Locust.
The War Store screwed again (I had forgotten ) they will list something in stock & after
you have ordered & check Order Status their back ordered I had ordered my 3 needed
brushes from them as they were cheaper than on the Warpaint store. I still had to
order my paints from the Warpaint web store as the War Store didn't have them.
The Paints will be delivered tomorrow whereas my brushes are on back order . Hopefully
the brushes will be delivered before I need to do some serious painting.
I've also been working on using "Command Locust" figs in the Game for Generals Rann,
Karn ,the Speaker, Scortch, & Myra. Still getting that straightened out before I can add
it to the Generator.
PM- I've gone over the BGG Fan Missions & uploaded 10 I didn't have, I'll need to run these
off on peel \ Stick paper & plug them into the Generator. I also found some bites to put over
the holes in the shields that I'm using as Boom Shields for the Maulers.
Admin Subject: Re: The Cog Blog Tue 10 Jan 2017 - 10:24
AM- I painted the Tickers Skin & Shell, the mix of Monster Brown &
Uniform Grey worked well for the skin. The shell got the monster brown/
Chaos Red mix it looked ok but then I realized the straps holding the
explosives on it's back is to be Oak Brown & it was too close to provide
good contrast. I redid the mix as monster brown & serpent green/elf
green mix & finally got a shade I liked Sort of an olive muted green,
I'll shade it later with Deep Shade.

I'm trying the Berserker next but just the reddish parts the body needs
a dry brush (the base coat is already grey) of Ash Gray but I lack a dry brush
until the WarStore gets its act together
PS- I think my Uniform Grey pot died but I should be getting a new pot
today from Warpaints ( I should have ordered their brushes as well rather than
trying to save a little $ by using Warstore)
PSS- I'll pass on the Berserker for now the fig is so full of crannies that I've decided to
dry Brush it in reddish brown(but push it into the crannies), Red Tone wash & then Dry
Brush Ash Grey
PM- Painting on hold for rest of day, I decided to do a conversion of "The Scarred Kantus"
after
reading some of the GoW fluff. To do General Karn I cut off a Kantus model hands so to
salvage the fig I took some hands from a plastic SotC Model to give the Kantus hands & a
weapon. The left hand was holding a big knife so I kept it to make the fig more unique.
I gave all a prep wash & later today will glue it together. I also will rebase the Hero Clix
Scientist I got to a regular GoW base.
I also in looking at the Baruk pic discovered it has no horns which my old DooM fig has so
I'll
probably cut off the horns to make look more in line with the Baruk pic.
Also I emailed the War Store to see how long they expected the brushes off backorder. They
replied
quickly today or tomorrow so it looks like my painting will not be disrupted that much.
PS- We Good News & Bad- The Good- the Scarred Kantus conversion is glued together, the
Bad I
got my paints from Warpaints but they only sent 2 of the 3 I'm missing Army Green, I emailed them
about it.
Admin Subject: Re: The Cog Blog Wed 11 Jan 2017 - 8:33
AM-I finally figured out how to work in Locust Commanders into the various
Missions so it wouldn't unbalance things & just provide a little "color". They
can't be killed if they are they just escape. I just updated the Generator to
include them.
I need to spray base coat my conversions figs (Speaker, General Karn) but
it's been so cold I'm not sure the spray can is warm enough as its in
the basement. I'll bring them upstairs today to make sure the can gets warm.
Still thinking of how to make my Baruk figs(2) more like the GoW pics. A back
cannon is needed & the horns & tail should go.
Updated Generator with BGG Fan Missions I didn't have before( will need to run
off the Cards for them.
The Rolling Thunder Mission on BGG requires a Rig which I don't see why you have a big
truck indoors. I change Rig to a Computer that needs repair to abandoned air defense
like dislike
system . Cogs must reactivate system in order to assure air cover for CoG offensive.
Added to Generator.
PM- Things warmed up so I went ahead & spray base coated the Speaker, Scarred Kuntas &
General Karn + the Boom Shields. Tomorrow I'll paint their skins.
Weird just found another package from UPS on my step ,its the Army Green Great
but why they shipped it separately from the other 2 bottles beats me. Maybe they didn't
realize the 1st package was short until they shipped, in any case it's here.
Admin Subject: Re: The Cog Blog Thu 12 Jan 2017 - 11:45
AM- painted the skin on my 3 Locust Commanders conversions & the boom shields
I also used my larger brush I use for bases to paint the Corpsers & Seeder skin their
initial coat of Uniform grey. The Seeder got a dry brush of Ash Grey but it doesn't show
much
as I should have strong tone washed it.
I can paint up the Corpsers & the Seeder with the remains of my brushes (The War Store
still
hasn't gotten my brush order back in stock-maybe today .The Corpsers need a strong
tone
wash then a plague flesh dry brush followed by a white dry brush. The Seeder needs to get
its
strong tone wash & then a Fortress Grey dry brush.
I just realized that with needing dry brushing I really should wait for my new brushes to do
them
justice. So for now I'll just glue the Boom Shields in place on the Maulers.
I've about decided to leave the Baruk fig alone it's close enough & trying to cut & add stuff
just
seems more trouble than its worth.
I also have 4 unpainted Cogs from the base set (I have 3 base sets so I could do all the figs
the mission Pack 1 included. I used some of the Cog figs for Conversions so I have 4 left)
I've been thinking on how to use them ,maybe create a new patrol & do head switch, make
a couple Onix Guards by a head switch with Cybertronic Doom Troopers
I also update the Mauler Stats on the Generator to account for the Boom Shield & to
correctly
account for the emulsion flail weapon effects.

Admin Subject: Re: The Cog Blog Fri 13 Jan 2017 - 8:41
AM- No painting today, I don't want to get into detailed work w/o new brushes
so I'm pissed somemore at the Warstore they advertised the brushes in stock
& they still do & then their backorder hasn't come in when they said
I did do a wash prep on the 4 Cog figs ,still not sure what to do with them but
leaning to just painting them as a different Squad. Head swaps are a possibility
like dislike
like dislike
I lied earlier I decided to try to paint up the 2 Baruks skin as it didn't require any real
detail work. I used Golden Brown(Ripper) ; the problem with the figs was that the
armor/straps & skin were rather difficult to separate out so the 1st one took longer
as I figured it out the 2nd went faster. I'll still need to do the metal gun mount on
its back & the straps.
I also glued on the Boom Shields to the Maulers.
Admin Subject: Re: The Cog Blog Sat 14 Jan 2017 - 18:25
Not much going on today but I just checked the WarStore Site & my backordered brushes
have been filled so expect by late next week they will arrive (I'm sure the MLK Holiday will
delay mailing) & I can start to seriously paint up my figs.
I'll probably start with the Cogs (not certain yet) & I haven't decided on any conversions to
the 4 unpainted Cog figs.
Admin Subject: Re: The Cog Blog Sun 15 Jan 2017 - 16:45
Not much going on GoW ( I'm into an historical bug with AWI, trying to combine the 4
AWI Games I have into a mesh with the 6mm AWI figs- been trying on & off for several
years ).but good news my brush order has shipped.
Of course it went right into Sunday & MLK holiday with the USPS but I should get them
by weeks end as the Warstore is just in a neighboring state.
Probably won't be adding to the Blog for several days but if I do it will be added to this post.
1/18/17-My Brushes are in NJ hopefully they will be delivered tomorrow but it could be
Friday.
I tried to pull head off one of the spare Cogs as they are separate pieces but no luck, they
are really glued in tight . Looks like I'll need to cut the heads off for a swap-still
undecided.
1/19/17- My brushes are in sooooooooooooo looks like I'll be starting on
my Cogs tomorrow AM.

Admin Subject: Re: The Cog Blog Sat 21 Jan 2017 - 10:25
Well, I did get a small amount done I found several of the Cog figs weren't
completely base coated so I wipped up a black paint/water mix and finished them.
I also noticed the prepainted Maulers had their clothing painted the same as the armor
so I redid those parts Necromancer Grey to fit my Locust color scheme. I still need to
convert their leather straps to brown but I'm thinking of perhaps doing the Locust
leathers black
I painted the flesh & hair on the Purple Man heroclix conversion ( used as a rescue citizen
mission).
Tomorrow we're having company so I don't expect to do any painting.

Admin Subject: Re: The Cog Blog Tue 24 Jan 2017 - 12:48
AM- Finally a serious start I did the Cogs faces inc. a soft tone wash and
then did the cloth part of their uniforms, the Army Green worked out well. I'll
need to check over some of the pics on BGG to make sure I got all the cloth correct.
The Cogs have many straps & in a few cases it's hard to tell what's armor and what's
cloth.
PM- did a couple of corrections to the clothing & then did the Cog armor Angel Green,
I think I like the effect but when the shade washes are done it should look I really
want. Still need to do the leathers Dark Oak Brown & shade with Leather.
Admin Subject: Re: The Cog Blog Wed 25 Jan 2017 - 17:52
The Cogs clothing & Armor & leathers are painted. I'll need to do a few touch ups on the
clothing.
The metal items & hair are next then the washes & final highlights.
I probably do a dry brush on some of the places like the boots with metal.
In general I'm pleased with the painting results, as mentioned previously I'm not sure
if its the plastic or the basecoat but it seemed paint did not flow easily on these figs.
It looks like these will turn out OK when finished.
I've done the metal parts & the touch ups. The shade washes will be next I'm using
Deep Shade for the Angel Green Armor & Strong tone for the leathers.
To keep things together as long as I'm on the Cogs I'll just update this post.
1/27/17-AM-All the shade Washes are done. Highlights will follow, I probably
use Snot Green(GW) for the Armor & Leather(WP) for the Leathers/boots. The larger areas
can be dry brushed . I'll need to pick out the metal buckles & the armor has what
appears to be electronic light indicators which I'll probably pick out as well but am not
sure what color to use ..red,blue,white?

1/28/17-AM- The Cogs are finished except for doing over the bases a 2nd time to cover the
black basecoat. The armor was a tad more work than I noted above as I thought the snot
Green
dry brushing didn't quite do it so I also did a 2nd dry brushing of Cameo Green (GW).
I'll do the 2nd Uniform Grey coat on the bases later this AM & then in the late afternoon
do a dry brush of Ash Grey.

Admin Subject: Re: The Cog Blog Sat 28 Jan 2017 - 17:20
With the Cogs done, it's the Locust Horde next. I painted up the bases for the
heroclix locust which were rebases. Queen Myra which was a conversion from
a prepaint Anna fig was given a Locust color armor & trim.

The first group will be the regular Drones (6) Basically the Armor & leathers will be black
and the uniforms Necromancer Cloak (medium dark grey) & Chaos Red trim.

Admin Subject: Re: The Cog Blog Sat 20 May 2017 - 18:39
As usual painting progress is slow, these are not easy figs to paint.
I finally decided to dry brush Shadow Grey on the black leathers.
Armor trim is abomination red also used on the gun stocks.I still need to do the
metal for the guns & some clamps . Probably a dry brush of metal on the boots.
At least once I get these Drones done the other 2 drone sets should go quicker
as I'll have my template.
OD
5/17/17- I decided to extend the red armor to the groin plate & the knee armor
to extend all around the boot tops. The Drone figs are on the paint desk & I was
doing 3 companion dogs from Zombicide & when I finished I looked at the Drones
& figured they needed some more red to help them stand out.
The Locus Figs have so much nooks & crannies in their armor it's just hard to figure out
what's what & I guess that's the reason I just have trouble getting around to painting
them.

Admin Subject: Re: The Cog Blog Tue 23 May 2017 - 11:15
It had to happen...I finished the regular Drones .
I've brought out the 6 bolo grenade Drones so hopefully I'll
get this project in high gear now that I have a painting guide as
the only difference is the weapon that's carried.
Really have no idea why this project goes so slow I love the Game &
have all kinds of conversions & fluff made up but it just seems
my interest in painting them lacks.
------------------------------------------------------------------

So this is where things stand 6 years later. To finish up I'll need
to check to see if I have the necessary paint pots or need to reorder.
I think I heed a new standard brush & I need to get a good artist lamp.

We'll see how it goes.

RE: GoW-OD Bucket List Painting
Wow, huge project but you're on the right track. All you gotta do is get your colours together. Prep your models and put some paint down on some more figures. This project could be finished by the end of the year if you go into speed demon painting mode.

Go for it OD !Zombie17
