Leviathans(and Madness)
"Lord accept the soul of OD,poor miserable Game Slut,
though me may be". Well here's the sad tale.I was surfing BGG (I must keep of that site...it's Game Porn ) and saw some posting about a Game called Leviathans .It's set in an alternative 1880- 1916 setting & it's hook is that they discovered a "whatever" that allows Ships to fly. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/63027/leviathans So the Great Powers (Britain,France,Germany,Italy,Russia, Austria -Hungary (I'm such a Franz Joseph Fan Boy) Japan & the US now have air navies. The game is thus Ariel Naval combat. The Game comes with cool pre painted Ship figs. The base set is Britain & France you get 1 BB,1 Cruiser & 2 DD for each side. They are also releasing the ships for each side separately. It's to be followed up with ship packs for other nations 2 at a time.It scheduled for this year but they are having some problems with the manuf. Anyway I rather like this & of course thought here will be a cool tactical Game ,what do I have that I could use as a Strategic Game to generate these tactical battles. The short answer I need a world map keyed to the "Le Belle Europa"period & that pulled all 8 countries in Leviathans . So Pax Britannica! its 25+ years old but it has it all & it's long OoP.Sooooooooo,I found a unpunched copy on BGG for sale & just purchased it. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1...britannica Now I really hope Leviathans works out it's production problems, still Pax Britannica is an interesting Game on its own. Pax Brit came,it's unpunched & in mint condition. I guess it set on a shelf for 27 years. Perhaps it's due to the rule book being 27 pages of fine print & no pics .The somewhat ironic thing is the designer does devote a column on the last page to the "Benefits of Colonialism" and what a positive thing it was for the natives. Yet the first phase of each turn starts off with an event roll which can trigger colonial rebellions & you have 4 charts to handle where this unrest occurs. Anyway it's really all I hoped for so if Leviathans finally gets published I'm ready. The Game handles the Naval part with 3 Units :Squadrons/Task Forces / Fleets so The Leviathans core set & an expansion ship set could handle things nicely. Supply, production, economic system & actual tension factors of the time (German Urge for a bigger navy & or colonies,Pan-Slavic agitation. Brit.Liberal Party in power,US Yellow Press, etc.) are in Pax so it really nails the period. The Leviathans limited war background is built in so you don't have any massive fleet action. The Game has a tension index which builds due to Events or Player actions which can trigger The Great War,but if that happens it ends the game & victory is determined (and if your Nation triggered the Great War you are penalized in the victory calculations). The Game handles all 8 Leviathan Nations but has an AI mechanic that allows for fewer "active" players so it could handle just Britain vs France & robo the others. So now I have more rule conversions to do, as of course I have all those cool plastic figs from War:Age of Imperialism (yes another GAME-but at least I've had this one on hand) so I can convert the land battles to a miniature battle. OD Oh & apologies to the House of Hapsburg for ripping off part of their Funeral Rite Sighing like the night wind and sobbing like the rain,— Wailing for the lost one that comes not again: |
