I think that it depends exactly on what you’re doing. Magnifying lamps that have a clamp at the bottom are really handy. I find mine pretty much essential now.
If it’s a magnifying lamp you’re after this site offers loads of reviews

I like the fluorescent bulbs. LEDs cause too much glare (for me at least)
