RE: Painted A Touch of Evil Characters
Nice, I really must paint all my AToE figs but I never seem to get to it.
This month I finally got back into painting after a long layoff but I'm working
on some British/French/Arab figs circa 1900.

I get like that sometimes I have a break from painting and it takes a huge amount of will power to pick up my brush again. The thing is I love painting but there's always a 101 other things that needs doing. + the painting back log can be daunting at times! Are you painting the c.1900 figs. for a particular game or do you just like collecting them?

I'm painting them up for a land component to the Game Leviathans.

In 1878 the Polish genius Rychnowski isolated an electrical fluid with remarkable lifting capabilities – a single, pivotal event that would change the world. The smartest military minds of the coming generation – Zeppelin, Jellico, Fisher and others – diverted their attention to the glorious new technological revolution and sea-going battleships were abandoned around the world. In their place, armored giants took to the skies.

In 1906, Great Britain launched the HMS Leviathan, the first of the "super air ships", sparking an arms race around the world. By 1910 the most powerful nations boasted large High Fleets, and the start of small skirmishes left the world uneasy.

Leviathans is a game published by Catalyst Game Labs that simulates combat between warships that have taken to the air in an alternate history 1910. The king leviathans, the battleships, are the largest vessels. Maneuvering in support are the smaller ships of light cruisers, destroyers, and others ships.

This is a Air Navy combat board Game but the concept intrigued me (not to mention the cool ship figs) & I have an OoP Game from
Eagle Games called "Age of Imperialism " which has a ton of
circa 1900 colonial service type Inf/Cav /Artillerty figs.so I
decided to add a land component & create a Linear Campaign.

The Leviathans core set has British & French ships (they
are working on a German/Italian expansion & eventually
plan for Russia,Austria-Hungary,Japan & the US)so my
Campaign will be these two countries clashing over N.Africa
& the Levant Region of the Ottoman Empire.

Libya will be the starting flash point & here's the background:

La République résurgente (working name for the Campaign)

The Third Republic Government decision to concentrate
on Africa to restore the French lost prestige from the Franco-Prussian War &
the insult of the Salisbury Doctrine waited
only for opportune circumstances.

Those circumstances arose in the decaying Ottoman Empire
North African Province of Tripolitania In 1910.
The dispute between the Saan Arabs & the minority
Berber tribe erupted into open conflict.

The small Turkish garrison unable to contain the fighting
gave up & withdrew. The Berbers outnumbered were
forced to flee finally finding refuge in the French Algeria
District of Oasis the home of their tribesmen.

The Saan in hot pursuit crossed the boarder overrunning
a French outpost & burning a few villages before
returning to Tripolitania.

The French Government declaring the Ottoman Empire
was unable to maintain order sent an Expeditionary
Force the Jabul al Gharki District to punish the Saan
and restore order.

The Arabs fell back upon Tripoli the French pursued
taking the city after a brief battle. The French then
threw off the mask & declared they were assuming
control of both Districts of Tripoliyania.

The French through secret negations had let the
Italians know that they would not oppose any
Italian claims to the Cyrenaica. Meanwhile the
Arab Tribes of Fezzan Province began to raid
into French occupied territory providing another
excuse for French intervention.

The Sublime Porte however had no intention to accepting
this territorial loss & requested Great Britain give
them permission to move Ottoman Armies through
British administered Egypt.Britain refused not
wanting Turkish Forces in Egypt.

The British were faced with a dilemma they could
not accept France pushing their control to the
Western boarder of Egypt & the Muslim population
of her colonies were supporting the Ottoman Empire,
demanding the French be stopped. British public
opinion was however hostile to supporting the
Ottoman Empire .

Then the Italian air ship Dandolo bombarded
Turbuk the unprovoked attack killed hundreds
& the Fleet Street press played up the massacre.
Subsequent news that the Italians were assembling
an invasion force created a public demand for
Britain to intervene.

The Majabrah Arab Tribe fearing the Cyrenaica
was threatened from both the French & Italians
requested protection of the British. This opportune
request freed the British Government from
direct support of the Sublime Porte.

The British responded by sending a force from
its Egyptian garrison to occupy both Turbuk
& the Al Wahat Districts of Cyrenaica.

An ultimatum was made to both the Italians
& French to cease hostilities in Ottoman territory
The Italians quickly declared their attack on Turbuk
was retaliatory in nature for treatment by the Arabs to
Italian merchants in the city they had no further
attacks planned.

The French simply ignored the British Ultimatum.
Thus the year ended with French Forces controlling
the Tripolitania Province in the West & the British
controlling the Cyrenaica with Arab support in the East.

In February of 1911 the French began to move
against the Arabs in Fezzan Province. The British
seeing if France succeed in taking the Province
they would have reach the Egyptian Boarder
sent their forces to oppose the French move.

The first clash occurred in the Jufra district.

Thanks Bloated One. I've been painting another 2 AToE characters today. They're almost finished and I will post them by Friday at the latest. I'm actually thinking of getting some villians. I know they're not necessary for the game but it just gives me an excuse to paint some cool figures!Watchmen02

I don't know if you're a painter but I heartily recommend you give the hobby a go. Yes it does take patience but it's a rewarding hobby and you get to use your figures in your games.
