RE: evil dead
I don't think I'll be seeing this anyway. I love all three originals and I think they should have been left dead. If anything I'd like to see an Evil Dead 4 with the legend Bruce Campbell (I don't care how old he is!).

I can't see that ever happening thoughInsane19

RE: evil dead
I'm not a great fan of the senseless gore films/torture porn that seem to have saturated the market at the moment. Maybe the effects are getting a bit too realistic, maybe it's the lack of story or point to the violence. Maybe I'm just getting squeamish. I have seen a few of the Saw films and the Hostel films and they bore and annoy me.

RE: evil dead
Just for an alternate perspective, I saw it (with my brother and his wife) and I was actually surprised how much I liked it. From what I had read ahead of time, it was meant to be less a remake and more a homage to the original, and I found it delivered perfectly.

First, I despise CGI (to the point where I'm really not interested in seeing a movie if its main reason for existing is as a CGI showcase), and I love the fact that this movie is essentially CGI-free. Brice Campbell is quite proud of this fact -- it was done "old school" and you could totally tell.

Second, like I said above, I don't believe it was ever meant to be a remake. I think that people forget how shocking Evil Dead was when it came out -- it was meant to be scary. Evil Dead 2 was the funnier one. A lot of the "funny" parts in Evil Dead are funny because the effects are so bad, a result of it being shot by a very young director on an absolute shoestring budget. Apparently, they'd always talked about "doing Evil Dead with a budget." We'll, this would have been it.

It's exactly what it's supposed to be -- scary as hell and uncomfortable. People forget that a horror movie is supposed to horrify you . . . it's kind of the whole point.

Cabin in the Woods (which I consider a masterpiece) really opened my eyes to this type of movie. Within the constraints of a typical (or the typical) "cabin in the woods" movie, this new director managed to keep it feeling fresh, with a few new twists.

As for the torture porn criticism, it really didn't strike me that way. I think of torture porn as Hostel of any of the Saw movies (none of which I've seen, but I know the premise -- get people into impossible situations and then watch their heads explode). Those type of movies purposely create a situation for the reasons of creating gore. I more saw the gory scenes in Evil Dead as a reaction to being in a confined area with a demon. I know, it's a very similar idea but somehow didn't strike me as torture porn.

Now, of course, with all that being said, the joy of art (in this sense, a movie) is tht some people will like it and some won't. There's no right or wrong answer to these questions, just varying opinions. This was mine.

RE: evil dead
I enjoyed it. I didnt go into it expecting it to be campy like the original. It made me cringe, not much has in a while. It is a straight up gore fest. I haven't really enjoyed those in a while cause they have just sucked, but this one I did enjoy, maybe its just the fact it was an Evil Dead movie.

Not to flog a dead horse, but . . .
. . . here's a great article which sums up what I was trying to say better than I did. The original Evil Dead had very little to no humor, it was a straight-up horror. Most people who are upset with the new Evil Dead are getting it mixed up with Evil Dead 2, which IS a horror/comedy. Here's the article, and I highly suggest the original poster reads it (I'd be interested to hear thoughts on it):

Which Evil Dead are you remembering?

I haven't seen the new Evil Dead yet but I'm sure I will sometime. I love the originals so much I just won't be able to resist seeing it. Regarding the comment from theconcerned above, though, I agree that the Hostel movies are torture porn. I have seen the first two and won't watch them again because it just makes me so uncomfortable (the same reason I have not watched The Human Centipede). But I would not lump the original Saw in with movies that are showing gore for gore's sake. I viewed it with low expectations and I was quite surprised and impressed with how clever the plot was. I watched Saw II and did not like it as much and I have not seen the rest of the series.

RE: evil dead
I saw this on saturday, and to my surprise i didnt absolutely hate it. I am, like everyone else, a huge evil dead fan. This homage/remake wasn't bad. It is not without fault of course. Somehow they managed to have the same lack of character development as the original. The gore was over the top and great. The dialogue was dreadful. The effects being mostly practical was a nice change of pace in the post CGI world. It also gave several nods to the original and the sequels. The biggest fault I believe is that they didn't manage to really capture the spirit of the original. I have always loved the first evil dead for its independent gorilla film making feel. Most of my absolute favorite movies always make me feel like the film makers, including the cast, were doing everything they could to get a movie shot, sometimes to extremes, because they loved the project. That seemed to be the biggest problem with this big budget flick. They were trying to make something to make money first, cashing in on the franchise. That is not to say that the film makers do not love the original, but it seemed to have less of the feel that the people involved were out to make a great flick first, money being the main incentive. Maybe that is just me though, I do feel like I may be too jaded against Hollywood now a days...but they keep shitting on everything I love.

RE: evil dead
i found it not scarry inthe least. i mean.. really...

the cabin inthe woods DID look good... added to the environment.

everything else was 100% predictable to me.. to the point of being unrealistic.

I felt like a jedi inthe movie. 99% of what happened played in my head a few seconds before the screen it was so predictable.

I think I may have seen too many horror movies in my time.. Zombie03

as for remake / homage. I like both dawn of th dead's different.. but liked both... Watchmen02
