If you have a zombie in your space can you fire at one in another space if in range?

There is no limitation that you can't.

(Only marginally related: the martians from Invasion from Outer Space cannot fire at far away foes if they're in the same space as one.)

Yes. You can choose to fire at any zombie who is visible and in range. However you will have to fight the zombie on your space (if you chose to shoot another) in hand to hand on your turn and then on the zombie turn. Possibly causing two wounds (which kills weaker characters such as students)
