Friend of mine has been with the Belgian army on two tours to Kabul now

nice... I would like to point out the dogs shoes.

Yep, it's to protect their feet from the heat from the ground and cars.
It's a bomb sniffer dog (or however you call it in english) and it's a belgian dog so it is not used to intens heat.

The guys who work with the dogs get very protective of them so I'm sure all the dogs have them.
