i have seen people talking about a dots sytem and i dont know what it is? is it because i dont have growing hunger or is it something that works with the base game too

The "dots" system is introduced with Growing Hunger and preserved with all the future expansions (including many of the small ones on the FFP website). It's used as a method for balancing addition of optional rules.
