So if a zombie event puts a taken over and a spawning pit in play then on the hero turn I play an event to cancel a "remains in play" event -am I then allowed to remove the taken over and spawning pit icons that were placed?

Yep, whatever the "Remains in Play" card did is cancelled!

So in this instance the Spawning Pit and the Taken Over marker would be removed.

However, zombies placed because of a TAKEN OVER being placed WOULD NOT be removed. Just the TAKEN OVER token. Gotta kill them rotters!
