If a hero plays the Escape Through the Windows event card ("all heroes may move through walls as long as they do not end their move in a building space.") can they stay inside and search or do they have to move, and if for some reason a hero cannot move out of the building, such as rolls a 1 on movement and isn't up against a wall, does it cancel out the effect for the other heroes later in that turn?
When played, Escape Through the Windows allows the Heroes to escape a building through its walls until the end of the Hero Turn. Recall that the Hero Turn isn't over until all Heroes have taken their actions.

The effect of the card isn't cancelled if one or more Heroes should decide not to take advantage of the effect. If a Hero decides to stay and search or he rolls less than required to end his move outside, then the Hero just doesn't take advantage of the card effect. It's still there until the end of the Hero Turn.
Read the card friends... it's in there...

Escape through the windows.
Until the end of the Hero Turn, all Heroes may move through walls AS LONG AS THEY do not end their move in a building space.
In addition, any Locked Door card played this turn is cancelled.

At least accordingly with the wiki... http://flyingfrogwiki.com/ffpwiki/index....he_Windows
In other words, the hero isn't forced to use the card's ability if they use doors, search in place or move within the building. The hero's ending position is only relevant when the card's ability is used.
Correct.
It's basically just saying you can't "escape" into a building, right?
But look's like you could pass through one, if you ended up outside when your move was over.
Indeed wade...

People do crazy things under pressure...

As long your move does not end in a building square you can move through any buildings you like...
