Hey all,

I'm interested in starting to paint figures. I know there are guides here on how to actually do the painting, but they're lacking some other things. I'm curious...

1) What brushes should I use?
2) What are good kinds of paints I can start out with? What are the better paints to use when I get better?
3) Are there any cheap models I can use(or even molds or kinds of material) to practice on before diving into my LNOE set? (Is LNOE resin?)

Thanks guys.
Some discussions here cover the same things. Get cheap paints from miniatures companies. Most companies (Reaper, GW, Privateer) sell boxes of "army colors" designed to go together to paint an army, which can be a good start.

Reaper by large makes some of the cheapest (and yet still good) figures to get. Their plastic "Bones" line models don't even need to be primed. As a novice painter, I've found Impact and Dark Sword's miniatures easier to paint than some others I've tried.

As for brushes, I and many people I know just use a cheap "detail brush set" picked up from Michaels or Jo Ann, maybe with one or two "good" brushes picked up from a game hobby store.
Bokya,

I totally know how you feel. I just took my first endeavor into painting minis and it was a bit formidable at first, gathering everything I was told I needed, but once i started it was quite simple. You just need to take your time and be patient.

To answer your questions,

I started with a painters pack from Joann Fabrics, found it with the oil paints and supplies. It was a "round" pack (all brushes are round, no flats) and it came with: size 2, size 1, size 0, size 5/0 size 10/0. I also purchased a size 2 flat separately. The pack cost about $8 the additional 2flat cost about $1.

For paints I have been using less expensive paints like folkart, americana, and craftworks. You can get these for about $2 at most craft supply stores. I avoided citadel because they were more expensive for less product.

As for this, I do not know, but I was thinking, go pick up a bag of Army Men (those green guys from our childhoods, or am I dating myself). You can usually find them at the dollar stores. That way you can paint them without worrying about screwing up.

Good Luck!
