It worked out playing last night with giving a slight (every so slight) handicap in the Heros' favor. The zombies still won (on a 6 game winning streak), but it was much closer. The change, as I mentioned elsewhere, is that when you discard a card unused, you do not immediately draw it, but have an empty, unused card space in your hand until the next turn.
If your group's like mine with the heroes losing since the second set of expansions came out, I recommend you give this little patch a try.
