Settlers isn't a *great* game by any stretch of the imagination, but it does have its uses.

In particular, it's good for getting people unfamiliar with the nature of euro-style games to see that negotiation can be a powerful tactic. There's a reason it's often described as a 'gateway' game. Yes, it's flawed. But it's also not a difficult game to learn, and there's an important 'aha' moment in it.
