Gloss varnish protects loads better than anything else, but it is, as you say, glossy.

A good trick is to *knock it back down* with some Testor's Dullcote, then brush some 'Ard Cote (gloss varnish) back onto the parts you want to be glossy or shiny again, like an eye, say, that dangles from its socket. Or the teeth of some beasty. Or the stuff coming out of that TOXIC barrel.

This way you get the protection of the gloss varnish without all the glossiness you might not want.
