From the FAQ:

Zombie Heroes are never considered to be a 'Hero' in
any way (Rules p19). The name 'Zombie Hero' more
refers to the fact that they are a Zombie that was once
a Hero rather than that they are a hero to Zombiekind.

It's also worth noting that if a card or rule says killed instead of wounded it does fill up a ZH's wound boxes and take them out of the game. The game is super-literal in it's wording, you can tell the folks at FFG spent a lot of time playing board games and thinking about phrasing and the like. Zombie24
