Victory in Europe
Over my many Gaming years I played WWII based
Games. D-Day, Third Reich Anzio, Afrika Korps, Tito, A&A, World in Flames ,Stalingrad, M44, Fall of France, Global War, War in Europe. I sold most in the Estate sale a few years ago & only brought only A&A,M44 & World in Flames with me to the new house. Haven't played any of them recently ,I like Theater Wide Games that cover the entire War and OoB that are fairly historical but also have a tactical feel so only World in Flames meets that criteria ( it covers both European & Pacific Theaters) but it's a rule & chart bear. Plus recently I've been more into Fantasy/Horror Board Games so the historical war game bug hasn't bitten for awhile. Then I got an email from Columbia Games that their Victory Game is being offered at 30% discount for 3 days so I checked it out as I like their Block Games. It covers the entire War in Europe 1939-1945 & has only 16 pages of rules. The OoB are Armies & includes both Major & Minor Powers. Things like diplomancy, Amph.Assualts,Production ,Para Troopers,Naval,Air rules are really elegant & mesh together well. I checked out the Units & found they were fairly close to historical accuracy. It has separate Cards for each side which throws Events at you & also sets limits on the # of battles you can fight in a turn(3 months) All in all it's a Great coverage of the European War in a format that lets you play it out Solo & does so without a massive number of rules. The Block Counters as always give a real Tactical feel to combat. The main problem with the Game is that the Map Board areas are too small for all the Blocks you could have in them. The Rules were also seen as a problem but Columbia put a 1.2 Rules Set that solved that Problem. The Size problem was solved by using Army Group Blocks & Charts ( a Fan BGG variant )so you need less Blocks to appear on the Board. I expect this to arrive in the next few days (Columbia doesn't notify you of shipping or provide tracking) so I'm looking forward to this return to my Wargaming roots. OD (PS I misspoke just got an email from Columbia Games that my Game shipped today with a Tracking #) Sighing like the night wind and sobbing like the rain,— Wailing for the lost one that comes not again: |
