Quickest solution:
Buy a cheap pack of playing cards, take out as many cards as you have characters and use permanent marker to write a character name on each. Then shuffle and pick from those.


As for protecting the character cards, you could always just use sticky-back plastic on them. Other than that what about a hobby shop that sells those sealable bags for people who make their own greetings cards? http://direct.hobbycraft.co.uk/shop/card-bags
